CHAPTER 12
Ben
Ugh.
I hate socializing at the best of times. And this is not the best of times. Iâm surrounded by strangersâand the occasional familiar faceâmy dick is still half hard from my make-out session with Grady, and my drink is empty. And this is the longest fucking party in the history of the world.
Or maybe it just seems interminable because Gradyâs across the room with not one but two scantily clad F1 fangirls hanging all over him.
There I go, getting jealous again when Iâve got absolutely no claim to him. All weâve done is share a few kisses. Sloppy, passionate, mind-numbing kisses, but still. And heâs gay, for fuckâs sake. Itâs not like heâs going to take oneâor bothâof them home tonight.
Nope. Thatâll be me in his bed. Finishing what we started earlier.
I tried staying away from him. But heâs like the goddamn Borg. Resistance is futile. So Iâm done trying. Or I will be, once this party is over.
If itâs ever over.
Besides, he has a point. There may be a thirteen-year age difference between us, but weâre both mature, responsible adults, capable of keeping our extracurricular activities separate from our work relationship. People who work together do it all the time, right? Whatâs the worst that could happen?
âHey.â Stefan comes rolling up beside me, having to shout to be heard over the techno beats the DJ is spinning.
âFancy meeting you here,â I shout back, grateful for the distraction. Beats watching Grady being pawed like a piece of meat. âI thought you and Lina were heading back to Stuttgart right after the race.â
âSo did I. But she had other ideas.â He gestures toward the bar, where his wife is waiting to be served. Something nonalcoholic, presumably. âSaid she couldnât leave without seeing you.â
âAs long as she isnât here to string me up by the short and curlies.â I try to make it sound like a joke, but like any good joke, thereâs a kernel of truth underneath it. More than a kernel, if Iâm honest. He can insist that he and Lina donât blame me for the accident, but itâs going to take more than that for me to forgive myself.
Stefan gives me an indulgent smile. âI donât think you need to worry about that. She wants to thank you for agreeing to be the babyâs godfather.â
As if on cue, Lina appears next to her husband with two glasses, one filled with amber liquid and the other with what looks like club soda. She hands the amber one to him and takes a sip from the other before turning to me. The warmth shining in her eyes reassures me that my family jewels are safe. For the moment. If thereâs one thing Lina is, itâs unpredictable. And more than a little intimidating when she gets worked up about something. As scary as that can be, Iâm glad Stefan has her in his corner.
âCongratulations.â She gives me a one-armed hug. âYou must be happy with todayâs result.â
Stefan nods in agreement. âYes. Your boy did good out there.
